Successful unicorns are mainly platforms like #Uber, #Airbnb I have designed a 2 days Platform Strategy & Breakthrough training program for executives to learn & unlock the potentials of platform business models for their companies. The training was done last week. The participants were from #FinancialServices, #Retail, #Telecom. We have discussed a few inspirational cases #Airbnb, #ZBJ, #XFire, #Qihoo, #Dianrong, #Quicken, #Adobe, #Nike, #Hema, etc. The participants learned about the best industry practices of platform like #NetworkEffect, #ChickenAndEgg, #Multihoming, #Disintermediation, #Monetization #Governance, etc. I have also invited Norman Tam from #Tencent & Samuel C.H. Wan from #Stockviva to share their wisdom to design, run, monetize, govern their platforms. It was very useful. This “Global FinTech Innovation and Industry Best Practices Program for Macau” aims to explore the following 4 key questions with the participants, prepare and empower participants to take on the FinTech wave and seize the opportunities in the Greater Bay, South East Asia and key markets globally.

  2. How to get the most out of this inevitable revolution to the financial services industry, especially in the Greater Bay Area and the SE Asia markets?
  3. How to innovate new business models for financial services with emerging technologies such as, AI, Big Data, Blockchain, Cryptography, API, IoT and AR/VR?
  4. What is the implication of the latest development of FinTech worldwide to Macau’s “Specialised Financial Services” strategy?

Dr. Toa Charm is the chief architect of this program.  He has over 30 years of experience in leading financial services incumbents, technology giants and innovative start-ups.  When he was the Public Mission Officer of Cyberport Hong Kong, he nurtured more than 300 FinTech start-ups, including TNG, WeLab, QFPay, Zhongan, Bowtie, OneDegree, Covergo, etc. Dr. Charm has teamed up with a group of experienced and passionate leaders from vibrant Fintech start-ups and global leading financial enterprises to design and create this program. All the trainers have in-depth industry experience from the world’s leading fintech hubs, including Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The class will be delivered in Cantonese and Putonghua.
The training materials are primarily in English.

Certification will be issued by Macau Institute of Financial Services to those participants who have successfully met all the following criteria.

  1. Completed no less than 8 modules of the program
  2. Obtained a Grade C or above on the assessment test of each participated module
  3. Completed the final project of the program and obtained a Grade C or above

The program fee is 15,000 MOP per student.

Remarks: Only exceptional case will be granted for participants to attend individual module(s); the program fee for individual module is 2,500 MOP per student .

We were so honoured to have digital thought leaders & evangelists in town to share their experience & I was the moderator of the panel. We shared mainly the real cases on ground like RPA,  SupplyChain Optimisation, SmartContract, TradeFinance. Key takeaways are as follows:

1. Customer value is the most important thing. Don’t have to know it is a part of Blockchain or AI.

2. With today’s technology, it is a lot easier & cheaper to try out AI.

3. Talents & culture are a challenge.

4. In the last decade, Coding is the basic for jobs. In the next decade, Data capability becomes a basic skill to survive & compete.

We have discussed with experienced tech investor Duncan and an emerging FinTech entrepreneur Eddie on their fund raising and deal making experience.

HeyCoins is our Cyberport Incubatee. They have started with a paper-made kiosk as a prototype and now are a leader in an innovative kiosk to turn coins into digital currency.

Four major banks have joined a trade finance initiative launched late last year by Switzerland-based UBS and tech giant IBM.

Bank of Montreal (BMO), CaixaBank, Commerzbank and Erste Group are now taking part in the project, which is being built on top of the open-source Hyperledger Fabric framework. The platform, dubbed Batavia, was first unveiled in October at the Sibos banking conference in Geneva.
