The Asian Knowledge and Innovative Forum #AKIF was successfully held today in the beautiful Arup’s office. This year’s main theme was “#Knowlege and #Innovation in the Post Pandemic Era. #PolyU #KMIRC and #ARUP were the organizers for the forum.

Arup is a leading multinational professional services firm which provides structural engineering consultancy services. Many of the region’s most iconic structures were their master pieces.

Michael Kwok Chairman East Asia from Arup & Prof Xiaowen Fu from PolyU kicked off the forum & Professor Eric Tsui moderated sessions.

It was my honor being invited as one of the keynote speakers. I shared my experience on how democratizing #DataLiteracy empowers knowledge intelligence. AI is automating many jobs including professional services like #engineering#accounting#legal and more. Reskilling professionals with data literacy can empower them to transform themselves to take up new roles and become a trusted advisor in the digitally disruptive world. Also, they can create new business models empowered by data.

Eric Chan #CyberportDennis Wong from #HKT & Yannick Lenormand from #Arup shared their experience on the topic. Great insight & examples.

Thanks Ricky Tsui Elise Chan & Nicole SY from ARUP to organize such a great forum.

Several key drivers of data innovation & culture for their organizations were in my f2f offline panel yesterday. Heartfelt thank to Edwin Hui #AccentureBessie Chong #EsquelSusanna Chiu #BonjourMaggie Yung #DBS.

#DataLiteracy
Here are my key takeaways:

1. The mindset of the top management on the urgency of empowering every employee is critical for #DigitalTransformation. DBS has trained >50% of their employees on data literacy with their CEO’s support.

2. AI not just automates our tasks but also releases us from tedious & dangerous tasks. Manufacturers like Esquel has made use of #data & #AI to make their staff happier, healthier & more efficient.

3. Start with the colleagues in key departments who are more reluctant to change & help them solve their problems using data. It will drive the company to become data driven.

4. Not just training is needed but also internal competition, collaboration with external #ecosystem, mixing colleagues from different units #Squad to do data projects, recognition, are important for culture & mindset change.

5. #Reskill & #Upskill colleagues on data literacy should be on the top priority for #HR to empower their colleagues in the #DigitalEconomy.

Thanks Catherine Chan #Kornerstone Andy Kwok #OpenCertHub to organize the forum.

#DBS, a leading Asia’s #bank, equips employees with skills to become everyday ‘Data Heroes.’ Over 16,000 employees (>50 of its workforce) have been trained in big data & data analytics in the last 2 years.

#Esquel, a leading garment & textile #manufacturer in the world, builds its data culture by organizing data hackathon.

#Bonjour, a leading #retailer in Asia, is pioneering #NewRetail with the power of big data.

#Accenture, a leading consulting firm, innovates with #AI & #BigData to empower human to collaborate with AI.

How about #HR#Marketing#Finance and #Accounting professionals? These leading professionals have already made use of data to amplify their brain power to achieve more.

March is a special month for women. In fact, we have many great female data leaders #WomenInTech as you can notice in our panels. Happy to see all genders and all professionals treat data literacy seriously these days. #Diversity & #DataDemocratization are critical for data#innovation indeed.

If you would like to learn more about how these leaders and professionals are enhancing their #DataLiteracy, don’t miss this forum on Mar 24, 2021 afternoon in #HKPC. Register here for a complimentary pass:

#Data is my favorite theme for #corporate #hackathon. I have participated another good one with the #Esquel Group, which is a leading HK-based textile & apparel manufacturer. The objective was to arouse the interest of Esquel’s colleagues in making use of data & gradually build a data culture for the company. It is a proven way to strenghthen data innovation of all levels.

8 passionate teams from different departments competed on the theme of using data to tackle internal & external pain points. They put serious effort from ideation to protyping. Well done. From #ImageRecognition#ML#DeepLearning to #NLP, the teams made use of #AI & DATA to seize opportunities & solve tough issues.

Appreciate Esquel has the vision & commitment to empower their workforce to #SpeakData. Democratizing #DataLiteracy to every staff was proven to be the secret sauce of successful companies in the digital economy. Key management & external expert like myself & Charleston Sin were the final judges & we provided feedbacks to the teams.

Special thank to Margie Yang Bessie Chong Daniel Lai Edgar Tung Stephanie Hung & more for their effort to make this amazing hackathon happen. I love the red & blue sweatshirts that we were wearing. It is a product of the Group’s own brand #DETERMINANT.

OpenSource is the core of Digital Economy. Top tech giants in the East and the West are all leveraging on open sources to innovate effectively together with their Lean Startup and Agile practices. Almost all key apps on internet and mobile, such as Google, LinkedIn, Airbnb, Alibaba, etc., that we are using every day are based on open sources. It stimulates and empowers Co-Creation in not just the startup world but gradually the Corporate Innovation world.

Join the upcoming Hong Kong Open Source Conference HKOSCon2020 HKOSCon on Jun 12 and 13 at Cyberport. Experts and users of open sources will share their experience. Not just techies will find it useful, business leaders and professionals will also find it valuable for their Digital Transformation and Innovation.

On the capacity as the Chairman of OpenCertHub, I will share how open source technologies democratize Data Literacy to everyone which is badly needed in Data Economy.

Appreciate the great support from Charles Mok and the great effort from the organizers Sammy Fung OSHK Open Source Hong Kong Committee, HKCOTA HK Creative Open Technology Association, HKLUG HK Linux User Group, and Cyberport teams.

Leveraging technologies to keep learning and upskilling ourselves during this period of time is a positive way to manage today’s global chaos. I have delivered a series of forums in different cities in China on this topic.

I have explored why and how we should reskill ourselves to become big data literate and empower ourselves and colleagues around us to be a Citizen Data Scientist so that we can unleash the power of big data in the real world.

A summary of my China Series Webinar on Big Data Literacy in April 2020 can be found here:

Many corporations have noticed the importance of Data, Big Data AI & aggressively kick-started its Digital Transformation journey. However, successful Digital Transformation involves far more than IT or DT (Data Technology) tasks, it calls for company-wide full participation of all departments. In any change management process, talent is always the key.

As such, top management including CEO, CTO, CIO, CDO, COO, CFO, CMO, HRBP, etc. will need to co-design digital transformation strategy, set up of organization structure, develop Data Literacy culture within the company, build up a strong data-literated team from recruitment, training & reskilling current staff, etc.

It is my pleasure to deliver an information session on Apr 17 for AmCham Shanghai to help their members in China to get the latest information on the critical keys & considerations for corporations conducting Digital Transformation. Thanks for the arrangement from Kornerstone & OpenCertHub in Shanghai.

We will explore:

  1. Global scene & China’s example in Digital Transformation
  2. Key successful factors & examples in Digital Transformation
  3. Importance of Data Literacy & Re-skill
  4. Roadmap on People Dimension in conducting Digital Transformation

Traditional companies can compete well in the DigitalEconomy if they can reskill & empower their employees with BigData capabilities & DataLiteracy.  Adsale, a leading exhibition services company in Asia, is a great example.

My team & I have conducted a 2 days big data workshop to Adsale’s 60+ employees from top to middle mgt, from sales to ops. The learning culture of Adsale is what I admired the most. A traditional company has the practice to keep innovating & learning every year, from DesignThinking, to BigData & AI. Big Data is an enabler but an innovative culture is the key for any big data project success. In today’s digital era, every company needs to be DataDriven & every employee needs to be CitizenDataScientist in order to have the right to compete.

We talked about the core concepts, applications, monetization, platform, cases, implementation, challenge, org issues, prioritization, governance & more. I also invited big data startups LivelyImpact ClareAI Luna2 Radica to share their innovations & IT veteran Andrew Ling to share his experience as CIO of several major traditional companies. All these discussions were fruitful & practical.

Thanks to all guests, Adsale’s mgt & their teammates, my partner Ivan Ng for their active participation.
