Can you recognise the young avatar with lots of hair is actually me (perhaps 30 years ago🤣😄)? Amazing and unbelievable, isn’t it? It is one of the fantastic demos in the HQs of Sensetime in Hong Kong.

I have arranged our CUHK Chinese EMBA students to visit #Sensetime #商湯, one of the top #AI companies in the world listed in Hong Kong. It is a part of my Corporate Innovation programme at CUHK. Appreciate Nixon Chau, MD of Sensetime Hong Kong, to host us and shared their latest AI innovations with us. Our students asked very sensible questions and we all learned a lot from our discussion. Also, thanks to my colleagues from CUHK Chinese EMBA team.

Sensetime is rooted in CUHK and well-known for their facial recognition technologies. They have tremendeous success in smart cities, autonomous vehicle and health areas, and more. They didn’t stop there and continue to innovate.

We were impressed by how fast Sensetime to come up with relevant, comprehensive and competitive #GenerativeAI innovations and applications in the high tide of #ChatGPT. One of the reasons is that they have invested heavily on AI technologies and obtained thousands of IPs. Most of these IPs are not commercialized yet. When new trends come, these IPs and the super computing power for machine learning will empower them to respond fast to the market.

Look forward to seeing more AI innovations from Sensetime. We CUHK are so proud of Nixon as our CUHK EMBA alumni. Our #innovation and #technology ecosystem in Hong Kong also appreciate Sensetime’s great accomplishments and contributions to not just Hong Kong but the world.. Keep it up. Thank you.

Pleased to take the well-designed Oxford Executive Strategy Programme organized by the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, in the last two months.
https://lnkd.in/gi6sfztr

It was not easy for me as lots of trips, meetings, trainings, talks, etc., after the pandemic. Also, the programme was quite demanding as well in terms of assignments, group discussions with fellow students around the globe and time required. Grateful that I could hang in there to complete it successfully, gained the passing grade and received the certificate.

I have been practicing and teaching business strategy and digital strategy for decades. Why did I take this programme? Well, besides refreshing and updating with the latest strategies, I was just curious how the University of Oxford was different from what I used to learn from the leading universities in the US like #MIT#Harvard and Asia like #CUHK#CEIBS.

I am glad that I took it as this programme gave me another perspective in a very structured way around their 4 Ps framework: Purposes, Players, Partnerships and Processes. Learned a lot from Professor Richard Whittington, Professor Trudi Lang and the renowned guest speakers.

My key takeaways are

1. While we are all overwhelmed by digital innovation like #AI e.g. #ChatGPT, every leader including digital leader, in #corporates or #startups, needs to be a great strategist no matter how advanced technology is and will go.

2. #GoodStrategy will empower the leaders to leverage on #innovation and #technology to optimize the performance of their businesses or ventures. #BadStrategy will kill a business even they got rocket science.

3. People worry these days that AI will replace human soon. While it might be true one day, if we can be strategic, innovative and creative, customer-centric amd empathetic, data literate and entrepreneurial enough, I believe we will be the last to be replaced. Keep our fingers crossed🤞😄.

4. If digital leaders can make use of those 4Ps, they can acheive enough more in their career and make better impact to their companies and societies.

Will share more about my insights in my upcoming CUHK EMBA Strategy course starting next week. See you soon, my fellow students.

Pleased to make a trip to visit the #GBA #Nansha #南沙 with a few of my advising entrepreneurs from Hong Kong yesterday. We would like to find out how to leverage on this newly developed innovation and technology hub to tap into the GBA market with 80+ million people.

We visited GBA #创享湾 where 7 incubators are located. We were also impressed by the innovative tech and applications from two leading mainland #AI companies #iFLYTEK #科大讯飛 and #CloudWalk #云从香港科技大學 #HKUST新鴻基地產#越秀集團 also set up their substantial presence in Nansha. The ecosystem is gradually getting ready for #innovation and #technology.

Thanks Gary Lam #PosifySheldon Li #BuyandshipJoseph Yuen #SwapiflyAlan So #LivelyImpactAndy Kwok and Victor Ng #OpenCertHubAcademy #OpenCertHub and some others to join me to this learning trip in Nanshan. Congratulations to my mentee, ex-colleague and good friend, Dr. Tenny Lam, CEO and Co-founder of Grand Rise Technology Limited, on receiving the Excellence in Research Application Award of the 1st ever Hong Kong Innopreneur Awards organised by #FHKI and sponsored by #HSBC.

Really proud of Dr. Lam not just receiving the award but also demonstrating how a corporate leader was successfully transformed to an elite entrepreneur. When Tenny and I worked in the corporate world, he had already demonstrated his #intrapreneurship and #innovativeness. He often brought in new business and ideas to solve tough problems. Well done, Tenny as I always believe your #enterpreneurship. You now found the right path to excel. Add oil.

Dr. Lam received the award from Professor Sun Dong, the Secretary of the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau #ITIB of HKSAR Government today in front of almost all key stakeholders of Hong Kong #Innovation and #Technology #Ecosystem.

Appreciate Rico Lau from LAWSGROUP to introduce and show me and my teammates Andy KwokVictor Ng and Derek Leung from OpenCertHub Academy about the Group’s creativity in various areas. It has really opened our eyes on how a traditional apparel manufacturing leader has successfully transformed themselves and been making a huge impact to the community. Impressive.

LAWSGROUP has turned the traditional buildings in old district Lai Chi Kok into vibrant and popular shopping, dining and entertainment co-creation spaces called “D2 Place” https://lnkd.in/g3MUvnpi with young #enterpreneurs. It empowers many young innovators to test out their products, pivot and scale up to real shops. I can feel the passion from not only the enterpreneurs but also the young customers there. Thank you Rico to have shown us around. I am sure there are a lot more to explore in these spaces and it is still evolving. Really appreciate the team effort from Rico, Leslie FokMiko Cheung and many others from LAWSGROUP to revitalize these spaces, empower #entrepreneurship and made many impossible to possible.

Rico also brought us to the Laws Knitters Studio 羅氏針織工作室 which not only shows the history of knitting but also provides a co-creation space for designers and manufacturers.
Riding on their ecosystem creativity, knitting products now have many varieties as shown on the photos. It can be personalized as well.

When I saw the traditional “#Singer #勝家” sewing home machine, it triggered a lot of memories on how my mom made clothes for me by her own hands from scratch when I was young while the economy has not taken off. Thank you mom and thank you Laws Group to build this studio for our collective memory.

Rico and I exchanged many good ideas on #Innovation#DataLiteracy#MetaVerse#ESG#SocialImpact#Community #Cocreation, and more. Look forward to having even more collaboration with him and his teammates at LAWSGROUP in different areas in the Year of the Rabbit and beyond.

“Spring Dinner 春茗” is back. In our Chinese New Year #CNY tradition, companies will organize Spring Dinners to host their colleagues, close customers and partners, at the beginning of the lunar year. It aims to kick off a new year and welcome all their colleagues back to work after their CNY holiday. Unfortunately, because of the Covid, most of the companies haven’t done it for the last three years. In the Year of the Rabbit, most companies have started doing it. We are really pleased to have all these back.

Thanks 黃創安 of HairAgain 髮再生 Haspero 桂圓美 and Michael Wong of HairCoSys to invite me to join their Spring Dinner. We all had fun with professional artists and their colleagues to sing good songs, experience sharings, lucky draws, etc. Hong Kong local start-up, XOXO Beverages, was there to serve personalized cocktails to us. Their innovation was not just an ordering system. We can mix and match different ingredients for the cocktails ourselves through their app and a spider chart shows the result of the mix. And the robot makes it for you. That was the green drink in my photo with Mr. Wong. What an innovation! Thanks XOXO Beverages.

It is my first Spring Dinner in the Year of the Rabbit. I will have many more to come in the coming weeks. Good news is that we can see friends and partners f2f in great atmosphere. The bad news is that I have to be on a serious diet after all these to lose some weight after taken all these tasty food. Enjoy your Spring Dinners. I’ll see you in some of those.

Both Ivan Ng and I were grateful to be advisors of HairCoSys. It is so impactful and meaningful to use AI to add values to a very successful traditional leader like Hair Again. Let’s use #innovation and #technology to transform more incumbent companies to stay relevant in today’s digital age.

Patrick S Lee and I conducted a workshop on “Emerging Tech and Business Model Innovation” to the award winners and top-ranked companies in our 2022 CUHK Corporate Innovation Index #CII.
https://lnkd.in/drExMCJM

Where did we start the idea to hold a corporate innovation index for Hong Kong? Well, Patrick and I had a dinner 2 years ago and explored this idea to help Hong Kong companies innovate better and more competitively in the digital economy. That was how the CII started. You can learn more about CII and the top-ranked companies here. https://lnkd.in/gNYaN-hm

Thanks for all the participants to play “Ping Pong” or table tennis with me. I believe effective learning is through active two-way discussion rather than just lecturing. Appreciate our participants were so proactive and engaging to express their views and open for new ideas in our class. That is why they are the best of the best in our CII. We also learnt a lot through our discussions. Thank you.

We also had joys and tasted the Australian big cherries together. Thanks to two of our participants Mandy and Leo. It was really tasty.

My final recommendation to them is to keep their innovative and open mindset and make it to be the culture of their entire company. That will sustain their leadership in the future unforeseeable disruption in the digital age.

What a way to start our 2023! A group of elite FinTech start-ups and leaders from Hong Kong joined me for a RegTech forum today in China Construction Bank Training Centre in Hong Kong. Hundreds of CCB colleagues in various cities of China have participated it online and offline.

This was my 1st event in 2023 and was indeed a great start. Meeting good friends first time this year was just wonderful and warm especially it was f2f. Also, the forum was very fruitful to learn more about RegTech innovation, applications, challenges and best practices in different countries. We also explored how Chinese banks like CCB can leverage Hong Kong experience in regulation and compliance plus the strong drive of FinTech by our regulators and government.

Really appreciate Victor Yim #Cyberport to share his experience at the beginning and all other panel speakers 鄭嘉泓 #WizpressoEmil Chan #AereveJacob Wai, FRM, FFA FIPA, FCMA, CSDP, MHKCS, LLM, MBA #DeloitteWallace Chow #FCCAnalytics, and William Lam #FundingReach. Also, big thank for CCB Training Centre’s colleagues and my teammates’ support.

It has been three years since I visited CCB Training Centre last time because of the pandemic. Once the mainland-HK border reopens on Jan 8, 2023, I am sure we will be there more often. We all hope not just everything is back to normal, but also more FinTech collaboration and value co-creation between HK FinTech ecosystem and mainland banks.
