Thanks to Joe Wan, CEO of #Tricor, for his experience sharing on talents cultivation in the digital era. Also, appreciate  for delivering the workshop on Leadership and Workforce Transformation in the Digital Era Programme. It was a part of our Digital Leadership Series for Executives initiated and designed by me and a number of industry experts and professors for #CUHK.

Here are a few key takeaways from Joe’s sharing.

1. How important is “#WHY” and “#PURPOSE“.
We have to help our colleagues know why he or she is here and how important and relevant their contribution is to the company and themselves. If that alignment works well, people will not just stay but also do their best in their jobs.

2. Listen to all levels of employees
Willing to listen to different levels of staff and answer all kinds of questions directly from staff from levels down will earn trust and pick up ideas that senior management can never think of.

3. Transform every employee to be a #startup
Encouraging #intrapreneurship and innovation from the bottom also encourage talents to join you and stay and grow with the company. Joe has supported their teammates to open a cafe which is now in their building and other places.

4. Take exit interview seriously
Not only finding out more about why a colleague leaves, but also offering staff, who are leaving, a final chance to stay. Joe said in the Exit Interview, “If you stay, I can waive the advanced notice for your next resignation if any.” That sincerity is really building another level of trust even the staff finally left. Alumni groups can be very powerful these days as ecosystem collaboration is the key to success in the digital era.

5. Respect each other
Joe asked and enforced every manager to treat their staff with respect. For instance, it is fine for a manager to shout at their staff but never one stands up and the other sits down. A simple gesture means a lot.

All these tips applied well in particular to the young generation. I learned a lot from Joe and Teddy. To thank Joe, I also shared a copy of my book #數碼力大提升 to him.

We had leaders and executives from various industries such as #FinancialServices#Retail#Energy#Pharmaceutical#Technologies, etc. to join the class yesterday. It indicated that leaders from these industries are keen on learning more about the soft side of digital transformation.

Appreciate Teddy Liu to co-teach this class with me. In fact, Teddy is the master mind of this course. He is an expert on the people side of digital transformation. Teddy shared his experience and wisdom on this subject matter. In my part, I explored a few digital transformation real-life cases with our students.

It was our honour to have Stephen Leung, Country Manager of #Pfizer Hong Kong and Indonesia, to share his wisdom on leadership, people and change management. It was very valuable and insightful. I was also impressed by his way to share his thoughts. He made good use of interesting stories and fantastic analogies.

Thank you, Stephen. I will remember to drink more water H2O. Healthy, Happy and Optimistic. Thank you, Teddy, to empower me and our students to master the change management and talents strategy in the digital era. Appreciate the great effort behind the scene from my CUHK APIB teammates.

The Hong Kong Corporate Innovation Index programme #HKCII co-organized by #CUHK and #HKGCC with the support from key industry leaders has been progressing well. We have invited leaders in town to join our pilot study yesterday. More background of the #CorporateInnovationIndex:

The pilot study aimed to collect feedback from the leaders on the design of our survey which is going to send to hundreds of companies to study their innovation. The preliminary design of the survey was a result from our literature review and direct consultation sessions and focus groups with close to 50 large to small companies. Really thank to the inputs from these participated leaders and executives.

Apart from the discussion with the guests yesterday on the survey design, we also invited Ir. Andrew Young #SinoGroup to share his corporate innovation experience. We had Watson Chan #HKGCC and Professor WM Cheung gave opening speeches. In addition, we had a panel discussion with #startup, well-established enterprise and #SME including Andy Ann #NDN, Horace Chu #Gammon and Mandy Chan #Frutodor. Appreciate for all their valuable sharings.

What’s the next? We will continue to collect feedback from leaders, practitioners and researchers to revise our survey design and finalize the constructs and measures of the survey. Stay tuned!

#DigitalTransformation is a must for almost every large or small company these days. Most of the failure cases of digital transformation is on the soft side of the journey. The soft side includes #leadership#culture#talent and most importantly #ChangeManagement.

I am so grateful to partner with one of the most experienced enterprise transformation leaders in #DigitalEra in Hong Kong, Teddy Liu, to co-create, co-design and co-deliver a course on the soft side of the Digital Transformation. We called the course “Leadership & Workforce Transformation in the Digital Era”. Really appreciate Teddy’s contribution. This course is a part of #CUHK #APIB #DigitalLeadershipSeries designed by a number of #digital experts and myself.

I was impressed by #ICBC Asia in the way how their senior management took #AI#BigData and #FinTech seriously. Usually, most of the senior leaders will only stay for 30 minutes of a training class and will excuse themselves from it. This time was very different.
All their top and senior management, including Chairman and Executive Director, actively participated in my AI and Big Data class. Guess what? They stayed till the very end of my class and actively participated in the whole day.

Really appreciate their leadership to demonstrate and lead by example. Their top management believe that continuous learning is the way to stay relevant and competitive in their financial services industry. By doing it themselves, it brings culture change to their colleagues.

My class today was on the Power Duo of AI and Big Data. It is a part of the Digital Leadership Series that I designed and led for the Asia Pacific Institute of Business #APIB of the #CUHK Business School.

I started my class today with a clear message to the ICBC team that they need to speak one more language on the top of Chinese and English in the digital economy. That is #Data. In order to be a #AIFirst and #DataDriven bank, everyone in the company has to have basic to advanced #DataLiteracy. Reskilling them on data is not an option but a necessity.

We then explained the AI and #MachineLearning technologies, business models and data monetization concepts to them. We also explored new AI applications in #FinancialServices and #DataGovernance with them. “Seeing Is Believing It”. I invited Patrick Tsoi, a veteran in #DataScience to use real data to demonstrate the power of Big Data in financial services. Thank you Patrick, ICBC team and CUHK team.

It is just a good start for the #DigitalTransformation for ICBC Asia. It is a journey and we are happy to contribute along with the team.

Seasoned corporate leader Patrick S Lee & I led an interactive discussion on corporate innovation with over 40 f2f & many online corporate & tech leaders. The discussion was open & insightful. Here was one that I couldn’t agree more.

Raymond Cheng, the former CIO & COO of HSBC APAC, was here today. He said, “The more difficult time we are in, the more innovation we need.” I believe it said it all for us under the tough time of the Covid-19 & heavy digital disruption across industries & economics.

I have shared my #BigData & #AI experience from #MachineLearning #Algorithms #DataLiteracy concepts to innovative applications in #FinancialServices #FinTech & #ResponsibleAI. Apart from lectures, case studies & group discussions, I have invited 2 AI experts to share their experience. The format of the program is a combination of lectures, case studies, group discussion, demo and hands-on, fireside chats with top business executives and AI leaders from corporates, #startups & #SMEs.

“Keep #Learning” or “#Reskilling” is one of the smartest ways to spend our time under the #Covid19. Good news is that this program is supported by the HK government #RTTP scheme. Participants may apply for the funding support & will pay only 1/3 of the fee.

The schedule is set on Aug 19 and 20, 2020. Hopefully it can be delivered in our campus classroom but it is also ready for a hybrid mode of campus and online Zoom. See you there.
