On April 28, 2016, HCD Learning held a lecture with the topic related to the disruptive changes brought by Big Data in the age of technology. It invited Dr. Toa Charm, the adviser of Big Data, to enable audiences to know more about Big Data from the business aspect.

Big data is not only a hot topic for technical specialists, but also by Eastern and Western business leaders. Almost all industries, whether it is financial services, retail, catering, and even health care, packaged consumer goods, transportation, is or is about to be hit by large data. Internet giants such as Google and Alibaba, big data startups such as Zest Finance and Kabbage, traditional companies such as General Electric (GE) and Haier (Haier), financial services such as Citibank and China Ping An, are using large data to create Our business model, which oversees our long-standing rules of the game, has won the support of our customers, while large data has also contributed to the pioneering innovation of products and services and making faster and better decisions at the right time.

 

The lecture is divided into three parts:

Due to the rising competitiveness of the world’s enterprises and the seriousness of China’s aging, the growth momentum of China’s economy has been slowing down. Chinese people can not just use low cost as a competitive advantage. Dr. Cham was discussing where the new strengths will be.

As one of the activities in 2016 International IT Festival, Hong Kong Computer Society – Business Intelligence and Big Data SIG is going to organize an event as “Revisiting Data Scientists – Work, Life and Future in HK”. During the event, Dr. Toa Charm is invited to deliver the welcome remarks.

International IT Fest will be held during 11-23 April, 2016. There are lots of forums and events related to IT, which gather a number of IT experts and professionals. On 14 April, 2016, Dr. Toa Charm is invited to participate in one of the events and responsible for delivering the welcome remarks.

The objective of the event is going to:

  • Revisit the job nature and qualification requirements of Data Scientists
  • Articulate challenges and trends in the field of Big Data
  • Discuss how Data Scientists transform the business
  • Connect professional Data Scientists and potential Data Scientists

Dr. Toa Charm will also take part in other events during the International IT Fest: (Hong Kong) 2016 International IT Festival: “Innovative Technology & Competitiveness Promotion”

The 3rd Big Data and Smart Cities World Show will be held on 22nd and 23rd March 2016 at Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza. Dr. Toa Charm is invited to be the Conference Chairperson of this event.

This two-day conference with the theme,‘Making Data Digital with the Internet of Things towards Building a Smart City’ aims to provide comprehensive learning experience with tangible input from renowned senior leaders and experts coming from all industries across the globe. The 3rd Big Data and Smart Cities World Show will highlight significant key areas of Big Data and IoT in changing businesses and people’s lives in line with the implementation of Smart Cities.

The emergence of Big Data has significantly impacted the quality of our lives through reinforcements of data analytics. With the Internet of Things, the focus has now been directed to engaging citizens and their needs with connectivity to maximise the technologies towards becoming a Smart City. Dr. Toa Charm’s article, “Senior Managers should Place Immense Emphasis on Big Data “, was published in Business Technology Leadership, Issue 2, 2016, mainly focusing on why and how they should pay attention to the trend of Big Data. 

Toa Sir explained what Big Data is and why senior management should pay attention to it in a straightforward way. In the technology era nowadays, Big Data is not only related to Information Technology, but also can lend a hand to the business regarding to strategy, operation and services. Toa Sir takes Alibaba, Amazon, Netflix and Youku as the examples to further elaborate how business can use Big Data to earn money, optimize the operation efficiency and even save a life. He hopes to get Big Data closer to the readers, and also lead people to the journey of Big Data.

GS1 Hong Kong organized a competition as “Best Smart Hong Kong Award” and invited Dr. Toa Charm to be an assessor of the Big Data Applications Category. The Assessment Panel consists of professionals of the ICT industry, with members coming from relevant industry and professional associations, companies, educational institutes, and government bodies.

The Hong Kong ICT Awards aims at recognising and promoting outstanding information and communications technology (ICT) inventions and applications, thereby encouraging innovation and excellence among Hong Kong’s ICT talents and enterprises in their constant pursuit of creative and better solutions to meet business and social needs.

The Hong Kong ICT Awards was established in 2006 with the collaborative efforts of the industry, academia and the Government. Steered by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, and organised by Hong Kong ICT industry associations and professional bodies, the Awards aims at building a locally espoused and internationally acclaimed brand of ICT awards.

There are eight categories under the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2016. There will be one Grand Award in each category, and an “Award of the Year” will be selected from the eight Grand Awards by the Grand Judging Panel.
