Just delivered a challenging but rewarding 4-day intensive CUHK Chinese EMBA course on Strategic Management of Innovation. Really felt tired and exhausted but all my effort was paid off with the deep participation and engagement with my excellent executive students from the mainland.

My dear students presented beautiful flowers to me to show their appreciation. Wow! It was the first time in my teaching journey to receive flowers. What a surprise and touching indeed. Thank you so much my dear students.

We couldn’t have acheived that much without the great sharing from my guest speakers Miles Wen (温豪夫) #FanoLabsNixon Chau #SenseTimeChristina Ong #HSBCAdonis Ya #NewRetail, and Thomson Lai #AECOM. They are all elite leaders from different industries. They openly shared their valuable experience on innovation from their perspectives. Our students including myself learned a lot from them. Thank you.

Felt particularly grateful to have Adonis as my guest speaker as he was my CUHK EMBA student who have taken this course (English version) before. He applied what I taught him so well and has created new breakthrough in his career. Really happy for him. He sincerely shared his experience with my students.

I would like to thank my senior executive students from different cities in mainland China for their effort to spend 4 consecutive days here and did a fantastic job in their group projects as well. I hope my experience in innovation has inspired them to lead their companies and teams to seek breakthrough and achieve their H3.

Recap, remember and redo… “What should we do differently from yesterday so we can survive today?”

Really grateful that we can bring Fubon Bank’s core team back to school to start their CUHK Mini MBA journey. I initiated and designed this CUHK Mini MBA programme a few years ago. We aim to empower the participants, either corporate leaders or startup enterprenurs, with the necessary mindset and skillset in the VUCA*Digital era. Since then, quite a few of corporates and startups have joined the programme.

It has been a great experience on empowering and re-energising corporate leaders and startup entrepreneurs to get them ready to seize emerging opportunities and manage the unprecedented challenges.

The participants take a series of modules on corporate innovation, digital transformation, branding and marketing, leadership and culture, financial management, and some modules tailored for participating corporates, such as, GBA, Regulation and Compilance, Artificial Intelligence. The students need to participate team discussions, discuss case studies, join study trip, and do group projects to apply what they have learned in all the taken modules.

Thanks for the support from the senior management of Fubon Bank especially Edmund Lam for his effort with my colleagues to make this happen.

Back to school finally! Welcome our CUHK Chinese EMBA students back to our main CUHK campus in Hong Kong. Yes, it was all physical presence with no zoom and no MetaVerse. Today, we had a welcome dinner with our professors, students and colleagues .

If there was no pandemic, our EMBA students in mainland China were supposed to take most of the classes in our Hong Kong campus. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to do so in the last 3 years and had to go online for most of their classes.

Apart from our core CUHK EMBA programme in Hong Kong, which is conducted in English, I also taught a few corporate innovation and entrepreneurship classes in Putonghua on Zoom together with a few guest speakers to our Chinese EMBA students. It was a valuable journey to share my experience with senior executives in mainland China and I learned a lot from them as well. It went well but it was still not as engaging and impactful as f2f classes where I can play “Ping Pong” (interactive chats) with my students on classes as I used to do.

It was a good start today to see our students in person. Good news is that my next class for CUHK Chinese EMBA will be f2f in our HK main campus. The students will come to Hong Kong for 4 consecutive days for every course. Will get it ready to have an impactful learning journey with my fellow executive students from the mainland. See you all soon.

Appreciate the great effort and support from our Chinese EMBA programme team. Let’s have many many great cohorts ahead without masks and Zoom any more. Cheers.

Patrick S Lee and I conducted a workshop on “Emerging Tech and Business Model Innovation” to the award winners and top-ranked companies in our 2022 CUHK Corporate Innovation Index #CII.
https://lnkd.in/drExMCJM

Where did we start the idea to hold a corporate innovation index for Hong Kong? Well, Patrick and I had a dinner 2 years ago and explored this idea to help Hong Kong companies innovate better and more competitively in the digital economy. That was how the CII started. You can learn more about CII and the top-ranked companies here. https://lnkd.in/gNYaN-hm

Thanks for all the participants to play “Ping Pong” or table tennis with me. I believe effective learning is through active two-way discussion rather than just lecturing. Appreciate our participants were so proactive and engaging to express their views and open for new ideas in our class. That is why they are the best of the best in our CII. We also learnt a lot through our discussions. Thank you.

We also had joys and tasted the Australian big cherries together. Thanks to two of our participants Mandy and Leo. It was really tasty.

My final recommendation to them is to keep their innovative and open mindset and make it to be the culture of their entire company. That will sustain their leadership in the future unforeseeable disruption in the digital age.

Today is the Moment of the Truth #MOT for my CUHK EMBA students in my Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship course. After 8 days of intensive lectures, case discussion, guest speakers’ sharing, they were presenting their group projects.

The project required my students to study a company’s corporate innovation from 6 different perspectives or dilemmas that they learned from my classes and offsite dinners as well 😄😋.
1. Old Economy vs Digital Economy
2. Customer Centricity vs Innovation
3. Strategy Execution vs Searching for Innovation
4. Internal Innovation vs Open Collaboration
5. Entrepreneurship vs Intrapreneurship
6. Experience Driven vs Data Driven

Really grateful to have such a group of elite executives and professionals in my class with strong learning attitude and positive, open and growth mindset. I can feel and see from the quality, innovativeness and teamwork of their final projects. Thank you so much for their great effort.

Appreciate my guest speakers to spend their weekend time to share their experience with us. We have learnt a lot from their talk, discussion and asking sensible questions. Thanks Jacqueline Chong #AWS #AmazonJens-Peter Brauner, FIET
#SiemensMobility #SiemensRyan Lai #foodpanda, and Austin R. Bryan, #CLP. Their sharing had really made a huge difference. Thank you.

Special thanks to the feedback from my last year’s CUHK EMBA2022 students as they requested the school to lengthen this course from 1.5 credit to 3.0 credit so that I can have more time to share my experience and discuss content more thoroughly with my students this year. It was indeed much more fruitful. Really thankful to like Anita ChanChris SoRicky LeeHans Till (CUHK Executive MBA, PMP)Daniel Ching and many others. It has been a year since they presented their final project. https://lnkd.in/gpHhgZS3

I enjoyed a lot with my students in this journey of learning. Wish my sharing can further nurture and more importantly empower them to be innovative leaders in their respective industries and professions. My last advice for them, “What should we do differently from yesterday so we can survive today (and perhaps tomorrow)”. Keep it up, team.

After almost 3 years of the Covid, our lives are gradually back to normal, at least, close to it. I am so grateful that I could meet with my EMBA students not only f2f in class (with masks), but also in causal dinners (without masks and with smiles) as well. I had a few dinners with different teams in my Corporate Innovation course in the last few weeks. Apart from discussing about innovation and technology, we talked about almost everything. I have a very good diversity in my class this year with business owners, corporate leaders from different industries, entrepreneurs and professionals like doctors, lawyers, accountants and engineers. That is an excellent mix to learn innovation. Really enjoyed our gatherings and understood a lot more about their lives and works. We all learned a lot more than in the classrooms. What a class! What a memory! Thanks to my fellow students. Appreciate Dop SunRachel Yu and Vincent Wong https://lnkd.in/gdH2YRny and a few other fellow students to organize such great gatherings. Hope the Covid is really getting away from us and we all can have more personal touch. It really matters and technology simply cannot replace it. Do you know which companies in Hong Kong are the most innovative ones? More importantly, what can we learn from them? I am so excited to let you know that we are ready to announce the result of our first-ever Hong Kong Corporate Innovation Index CII on Nov 23, 2022.

After more than one-year work on CII, we have identified the most innovative enterprises and SMEs in Hong Kong based on our innovation framework. We will also announce a Composite Index for Corporate Innovation in Hong Kong so that we can compare our improvement in the future years. Don’t miss it. Find out more and register here: https://lnkd.in/dznKapFj

Our aim is not so much on the rankings and awards, but more on identifying the gaps and empowering our Hong Kong companies to innovate more effectively. A series of seminars and workshops will follow. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to this project as it is impactful, meaningful and influential to Hong Kong competitiveness and sustainable growth.

In the past year, we have done a series of tasks and in fact iterations of tasks, e.g. research, pilot study, interviews, survey, analysis, expert groups, etc., to get these results ready. It was not an easy job as you can imagine. Appreciate all the effort and hard work from our CUHK teammates, all steering committee members, all organizing committee members, all sponsors, all supporting organizations and certainly all the companies who participated in our survey and discussions.

Please join us in the afternoon of Nov 23, 2022 to learn more about corporate innovation. Apart from the CUHK senior management, we will have 2 discussion panels. One is on corporate innovation and another one is on SME innovation. We will talk about the findings from our survey and then discuss with the panelists. They are all ranked high on our Corporate Innovation Index.

HKSAR Government top officials, CUHK management, the top management of the awardees, the key leaders on innovation and technology ecosystem in Hong Kong have confirmed to join the ceremony. Please come to learn from and mingle with them.

What a week for me last week! I shared my experience on corporate innovation and entrepreneurship with my EMBA, MBA and then Mini-MBA students in a week. That was a very packed but very fruitful and meaningful week for me.

Let me share a bit more on my Mini-MBA class as it was interesting. Our Mini-MBA programme is a series of one-day modules for business executives professionals and entrepreneurs to upskill themselves under their busy schedule. Our main theme is Innovative Leadership. My class this year had a very good mix of executives and professionals from commercial and public sectors like #HKHA Hong Kong Hospital Authority, entrepreneurs from startups like #Aerosim #BioMed, and team leaders from #HKSTP. We mixed them up for class exercises and discussion. That indeed was the best way to learn innovation as diversity is a key success factor for great innovation. Appreciate their active participation and sharing thoughts. Great class! Also, big thank to HKSTP Garland Chow and Gallen Leung to encourage amd support their #startups to join this programme.

Just finished another two fruitful days with my CUHK EMBA students. I continued to talk about corporate innovation. Appreciate Ryan Lai#foodpanda to join us in the weekend and share his corporate innnovation and entrepreneurship experience with us. It was a fruitful and insightful session. Thanks Ryan.

I met Ryan when he was running his startup and now he is heading the foodpanda Hong Kong. He is bringing in his entrepreneurial experience to run foodpanda. We can all see the great achievements of Ryan and his company in the last few years.

It is often hard to balance execution and innovation. From Ryan, we all learnt a lot how to acheive results and at the same time to keep innovating like an enterprenur.

We have discussed a few key questions for the success of corporate innovation. Thanks my good students like Edmund ChanDop Sun to ask sensible questions as well.
1. What can corporates learn from the Startup Cycle?
2. How to empower staff to innovate with the support from experienced leaders and corporate resources?
3. How to prioritize and decide when and how to start a new business?

My goal is to empower my EMBA students to be entrepreneurial leaders to manage and grow their businesses. Will continue this mission in my journey of nurturing more future elite leaders for our society.
