Grateful to have a fruitful discussion with 3 elite digital leaders in Hong Kong and share our experience with a group of senior executives of MTR. Thank you to my panel guests:
Wai-yin Wan #MTR
Matthew Chan #JardineRestaurantGroup
Michael Yung #Google #GoogleCloud

Our main theme was Digital Strategy: Lead and Execute Your Digital Vision. It was really inspiring to many participants including myself indeed.

My 3 key takeaways are:

1. Digital Strategy should be seen as Strategy in Digital Era; Digital Transformation should be thought as Transformation in Digital Era; and certainly Digital Leader should transform themselves into Leaders in Digital Era. If we have no Strategy and cannot get transformation working, there is no place for Digital and certainly no place for Digital Leaders.

2. Cascading Strategy down is one of the major challenges for any companies. Just townhall communication is far from enough. Treat every employee differently just like how we are doing for customers. What does our Strategy mean to every single one of employees? Rather than just “Segment of One” for customer (customer centric or customer obsessed), can we do “Workforce of One” (employee centric or employee obsessed)?

3. Innovation will just become a threatre and showroom if we don’t understand the first 2 points. Even you got a fancy innovation head title, it doesn’t mean you can overcome all challenges in Transformation including Digital Transformation. Eventually you lose your passion and leave your company voluntarily or involuntarily.

Thank you to MTR Learning and Development team and my CUHK teammates to make this meaningful panel discussion happen. Appreciate it.

Pleased to take the well-designed Oxford Executive Strategy Programme organized by the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, in the last two months.
https://lnkd.in/gi6sfztr

It was not easy for me as lots of trips, meetings, trainings, talks, etc., after the pandemic. Also, the programme was quite demanding as well in terms of assignments, group discussions with fellow students around the globe and time required. Grateful that I could hang in there to complete it successfully, gained the passing grade and received the certificate.

I have been practicing and teaching business strategy and digital strategy for decades. Why did I take this programme? Well, besides refreshing and updating with the latest strategies, I was just curious how the University of Oxford was different from what I used to learn from the leading universities in the US like #MIT#Harvard and Asia like #CUHK#CEIBS.

I am glad that I took it as this programme gave me another perspective in a very structured way around their 4 Ps framework: Purposes, Players, Partnerships and Processes. Learned a lot from Professor Richard Whittington, Professor Trudi Lang and the renowned guest speakers.

My key takeaways are

1. While we are all overwhelmed by digital innovation like #AI e.g. #ChatGPT, every leader including digital leader, in #corporates or #startups, needs to be a great strategist no matter how advanced technology is and will go.

2. #GoodStrategy will empower the leaders to leverage on #innovation and #technology to optimize the performance of their businesses or ventures. #BadStrategy will kill a business even they got rocket science.

3. People worry these days that AI will replace human soon. While it might be true one day, if we can be strategic, innovative and creative, customer-centric amd empathetic, data literate and entrepreneurial enough, I believe we will be the last to be replaced. Keep our fingers crossed🤞😄.

4. If digital leaders can make use of those 4Ps, they can acheive enough more in their career and make better impact to their companies and societies.

Will share more about my insights in my upcoming CUHK EMBA Strategy course starting next week. See you soon, my fellow students.

Grateful to have a lunch discussion with a passionate and entrepreneurial leader, Alan Lai. Alan is the Group CEO of the Pet Space Group, a leading veterinary group in Asia. I love their #Medutainment strategy. He is also one of our elite CUHK EMBA alumni and my learning partner in CityU DBA. Our roads are crossing in multiple dimensions #有緣

When we met last time in one of the CUHK 60th Anniversary events in HKJC, we touched based on the potential opportunities for a traditional pet veterinary group in the digital economy. That was why we had this lunch to explore further on potential strategies for the group like platform strategy and data monetization strategy.

Look forward to having a few more rounds of discussion with Alan. His business has lots of potential if Alan can have a right digital strategy.

Just finished conducting a 4 days intensive and fruitful EMBA course on Innovation and Intrapreneurship Management for CUHK. On one hand, I am exhausted. On the other hand, I am very grateful as 83 top executives from the mainland China participated my class on Zoom even under the pandemic situation. Engaging 83 executive students for 4 full days on Zoom (plus conducted in Putonghua) was not easy as you could imagine but we did have a joyful and valuable learning experience together.

Not only the number of students has broken my record of teaching EMBA class, the quality of the students were very impressive. They came from different industries like property, professional services, design, manufacturing, engineering, technology and even agriculture. At the beginning, I had some doubt on how much they wanted to learn innovation and how much effort they would put on a course as they are all busy and uprising bosses and top executives. To my surprise, they were serious and really put lots of effort to learn. Really appreciate their passion and perservance to learn.

Apart from going through core concepts and models, we learned corporate innovations and intrapreneurship by exploring 10 influential and inspiring internationl and Chinese cases. We discussed, debated and learned through this process. It was also my honour to have three elite leaders as my guest speakers to share how they innovate as a startup (Sum Wong from #EventX), a tech giant (Jacqueline Chong from #Amazon#AWS) and a traditional enterprise (Damien Wu#ChinaChem). We all learned a lot from them. Really appreciate it.

Now, I need to relax a bit and get a good sleep. Enjoy the Easter Holiday!

The East Meets The West. Our #CUHKEMBA fellow students really experienced it in the last few weekends. Morning on digital and afternoon on Chinese wisdom.

I taught about corporate innovation and digital strategy. Most of today’s digital innovation and strategy wisdom and experience were rooted mainly from the US. Professor Sin #冼日明 taught about traditional Chinese wisdom #易經 that was originated from China. That’s the best of Hong Kong where we can make use of the best wisdom of both worlds. We have been doing our best to bring out the synergistic power of the East and the West.

Thanks for Professor Andrew Chan and Pong Yuen, Howard Lam of #CUHK #CUHKEMBA CUHK Business School CUHK EMBA to make these happened from the very beginning till now.

More details about the classes just over the last few weekends can be found here. Hope to see you soon in our classes and/or other occasions in our ecosystem.

Digital Leadership Training Series:
Competing in the Digital Economy: Platform Revolution & Breakthrough Training Programme

數字領導力培訓系列:
數碼經濟的核心策略:平台革新與突破」課程

What is a platform?

What do these top companies like Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Tencent and Ctrip have in common? Apart from being the world’s highest valuated businesses, they are the world’s most influential platforms.

Defining platforms

Source: https://www.launchworks.co/platform-strategy-illustrated/

By operating as open ecosystems, companies match suppliers of products, services, or content to consumers, and gain enormous value and market share.  These companies, known as multilateral platforms, act as intermediaries, connecting service providers and users to serve users of different needs.

China Human Capital Forum 2019 was successfully held in Yantai 烟台 in TsingTao China. 1,000+ CEO and HR professionals joined the forum. Keynote speakers were experts in digital transformation, future workforce, digital leadership, etc. It was my honour to be one of them to share my experience on #DigitalStrategy for Traditional Enterprise. Lesson learned is that there is an urgency to #Reskill our colleagues in the AI Era. CEO and HR of leading enterprises are well aware of the storm of #DigitalDisruption. They are proactively reskilling their colleagues to best capitalize what digital can offer them. One example is #AIAugmentation  #人智 where human work with  robots to gain competitive advantages over the laggards. These companies have created new AI positions and retrain their staff on AI BigData and DataQuotient to take up these new jobs. Have we reskilled yet?

“Banking is necessary but banks are not” ( quote from Bill Gates ) is not just applied for the incumbents in banking industry but all leaders in traditional industries. Traditional companies are facing unprecedented challenges from 4 major forces in the Digital Economy. Many of them will not survive if they don’t act now & don’t do it right. Last week in Shanghai, I have shared my experience gained from consulting large incumbents & cultivating innovative startups. We talked about these 4 key types of competitors for traditional companies: 1. Tech Giants Amazon Alibaba 2. Unicorns Gogovan Klook 3. Traditional companies from other industries with great digital capabilities to cross over to your industry Volkswagon getting into insurance 4. Companies in your same industry but with better digital capabilities than you Strategy that we learned from Business School, MBA and EMBA still matters but may not be good enough to empower leaders to win & even survive in the Digital Age. We talked about how to formulate Digital Strategy, cultivate a Digital Workforce & work with Digital Colleague around us. More importantly, how to innovate & collaborate with startups. Will deliver this talk in Tsingtao, Taiwan, Malaysia & more Asia’s cities in the next few months. CU.
