Open For Enrolment: HKICT FinTech Awards 2022

Here you go again – The 2022 #FinTech Award of the Hong Kong ICT Awards #HKICTA. It is one of the most recognized, reputable and impactful FinTech awards in Hong Kong and in fact Asia-wide as well. The award winners are the best of the best. It is now open for enrollment till Jun 27, 2022. I am so fortunate and honoured to have been the Chief Judge of this award since 2019.

Congratulations again to the Grand Award winners in the last few years including Tomas Holub #CoverGo (2019), Miles Wen (温豪夫) #FanoLabs (2020) and Calvin Cheng, CFA #Wizpresso (2021). They not just won the award but also transformed the #FinancialServices industry.

Fortunately, we have built a vibrant eCommerce #ecosystem in Hong Kong. Merchants and SMEs can focus on marketing and #innovation. For the rest of these challenges, they can leverage the respective partners in the ecosystem. In the last 6 years, Hong Kong has cultivated 4,000+ #startups and 10+ #unicorns. They have been making pivotal impact and significant contribution to our society in this chaotic pandemic period.

Appreciate #HKIB teammates led by Mr. David Kwok, Carrie Leung and Philip Kam for their leadership and professional management of the FinTech Award. The good news for this year is that we are witnessing better and stronger teams year from year. Here are the 3 key highlights.

1. We had record high in terms of number of applications this year.

2. We had richer varieties of #FinTech innovations this year, such as #InsurTech, #RegTech, #Tokenization, #AI on HR in Financial Services.

3. We also appreciated more collaboration of FinTech #startups #entrepreneurs and financial services incumbents #leaders to #cocreate better customer experience, products and services, and innovate new business models. From competition to collaboration.

With this foundation and FinTech ecosystem that we have built for Hong Kong, plus initiatives like HKMA #FinTech2025 and #CDI, #GBA, #ESG, #InsuranceConnect, etc., We are expecting even better innovations coming in the next few years.

Congrats to all of you including myself and be grateful to be a part of the FinTech innovation journey for Hong Kong. Thank you.

(HKFTW2021) Second day of Hong Kong Fin Tech Week

Building Billion Dollar Ecosystems was the key theme of my panel discussion with the top leaders from #HSBC on the 2nd day of #HongKongFinTechWeek 2021.

I had a team of experienced banking leaders in my panel. Together they are a great representation of not just HSBC but also the incumbent banks. Really thank and appreciate their contributions and sharings:
1. Christina Ong, Head of Business Banking, Hong Kong, HSBC
2. Yvonne Yiu, Managing Director, Head of Global Liquidity & Cash Management, Hong Kong, HSBC
3. Dharini Kannan Hemant, Head of PayMe, HSBC
4. Sami Abouzahr, Head of Customer Wealth, Hong Kong, HSBC

We had a full house today. If you have missed it, here are my key takeaways.
1. Align external and internal stakeholders of the ecosystem, such as #FinTech #startups, #regulators, internal colleagues like #compliance and #procurement, to focus on customers. Do we know their pain points? Can we solve them effectively and fast enough? Can we collaborate with the ecosystem to achieve these?

2. Culture and practice do impact the effectiveness of the ecosystem collaboration. #Payme was a very important milestone for HSBC not just business but also internal buy-in on how innovation and agile worked. The passion of the Payme team really made a difference to influence the culture of the bank.

3. How we can go beyond banking and empower our customers from their end to end journey and help them see the mutual benefits are very important.

Elephant can dance and change. We can see major banks like HSBC are very determined to make changes to transform themselves into an innovative and digital bank instead of being perceived as a traditional bank. The end game is still who can effectively identify and solve their customers’ pain points fast enough. Value co-creation with the ecosystem is the only way.

Big thank for Jaff Lau Winny So Agnes Tin Noel Yick Cecilia Wong and many other HSBC colleagues to make this wonderful forum happened.

#GBA (80+ million people in 11 cities of South China) and #ASEAN (650+ million people in 10 countries of SE Asia) are the two biggest and rapidly growing markets nearby Hong Kong. Enterprises, #SMEs and #Startups in Hong Kong are finding ways to seize these unprecedented opportunities for them.

Today, I was so grateful to have experts on GBA and ASEAN to share their experience in 2 consecutive forums. I moderated one forum on GBA in #SunLife in the morning and moderated another forum on ASEAN in #HKPC in the afternoon.

(Hong Kong) “The Golden 10 Years of Hong Kong Startups”

“The Golden 10 Years of Hong Kong #Startups” or “香港初創黃金十年” – That was the main theme of my interview with Hong Kong #ITPro IT PRO, Giant Media 炬傳媒 – a leading IT magazine for #digital and #corporate leaders in Hong Kong. The whole article was published on the latest volume vol 173. https://lnkd.in/g-wj3FDp

I was so grateful to study #ComputerScience and start my career 30 years ago in #SiliconValley in the US.  Then, lots of ups and downs throughout my career. In the interview, I shared my career experience from the US to Asia and from the corporate world to recently startups.

The 1st “5 Golden Years of Hong Kong Startups”:
I have been heavily engaging in the startups ecosystem since I joined Cyberport as the 1st Chief Public Mission Officer. My mission in Cyberport was to cultivate not just over 1,000 startups but also an ecosystem to connect all key stakeholders so new and existing startups can leverage on it to grow.

Glad to see that we have established a vibrant international #ecosystem for our start-ups to grow and for our corporates to co-innovate with in the last 5 years. With the joint effort from the key stakeholders in our ecosystem like #Entrepreneurs, #Investors, #CorporateLeaders, #Incubators, #Professors, #Regulators, #PolicyMakers, #Professionals, and more, we not only have created 10+ #Unicorns for Hong Kong but also have empowered quite a few influential #B2B collaborations.

The 2nd “Golden 5 Years of Hong Kong Startups”:
With the establishment of a competitive startup ecosystem in Hong Kong, we need to leverage and capitalize on this foundation in the next 5 years to grow Hong Kong to be the leading #innovation and #technology hub in the world. We do have 2 big markets, #GBA and #ASEAN, just next door. Let’s join hands to seize these unprecedented opportunities.

As a professor, an entrepreneur, an investor, and advisors to both startups and corporates, I am continuing my effort to contribute, empower and engage with this ecosystem, and further extend it to GBA and ASEAN in coming 5 golden years for HK startups.
